A few more datapoints: - I reproduced the problem on another identical machine, so the chances of just misbehaving hardware are really slim now. - I can only reproduce the problem with udev, and it always occurs at the point where it is synthesizing hotplug events - blacklisting uhci-hcd makes the problem go away.
