AHCI interface implements PIO HSM in hardware and I can't tell much about what's going on. SFF compliant controllers like ata_piix or sata_sil use software PIO HSM implementation so by sprinkling printks properly we can see what's going on. If you're on intel ICHs, put the controller into native IDE mode in BIOS will give you ata_piix ports instead of ahcis. If your drive is connected to an add-on card like JMicrons, you'll need to move it to the port coming out of ICHs. Please lemme know if you can make such configuration. I'll post a debug patch.
