The system freezed again, after one hour uptime, for about 4 minutes 
until I sent a flood of icmp pings to its NIC, and it woke up. The clock 
(as reported by command "date") stayed behind for 4 minutes.
And again half an hour later.
Can this be related to the NIC drivers (r8169) ?
