Panic over. It was attempting to boot from disk... just not the right one.

I have now tried Bios version 1001. This does not solve the problem. Also tried
with maxcpus=3. I have also performed all updates offered by aptitude,
including updating to kernel version 2.6.24-21-server.

Next step is to try a 'mainline linux kernel'. Not sure what I am doing here,
since I have never tried it before. About to do some research. Once again, any
help gratefully received.
