Without the patch or with the second patch your machine should try to enable interrupt mode, then report missing interrupts and switch to poll mode again, then stay in poll mode. After this point first and second patches should behave the same, but you report that first one works, while second fails. It means that I don't understand the problem, and I _need_ to see the log from the second patch. In particular, I need to see the interrupt->poll transition and AE_TIME occurance with second patch.
