I think what might help, is if somebody can simply
disable hal(to see if this is the reason), and acpid.
just to see if these two might be the reason for the storm to be fired off.
(I can try over here with a livecd, but might have mixed results).
As of now I can leave my machine on with the latest kernel
to see if I get a storm triggered(wont shutdown, just s2ram if need be).

Also with disabling hal,  some distros  have a hard time with this
example:xserver is built with hal support.
