I've tried building kernels both with and without the patch, and neither of them seems to detect the buttons properly. I'll try to look into it some more on my end, but it would be great to see if you have the same behavior. It looks to me like there haven't been any changes to the driver in https://github.com/torvalds/linux to that driver that aren't in 3.17-rc5, so I think that continuing to use that for now should work.
