Multiple photos of kernel panics. The file name cpuidle is the only time i had
a different panic, it happened when trying cpuidle.off=1 parameter. One of the
photos is taken off reddit, but made by me

Various Linux distributions (i tried following: Fedora 43, Fedora 44, Arch
Linux, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, OpenSUSE Leap, CachyOS, Linux Mint, Debian) all
started randomly kernel panic since around august 2024, on my machine (ASUS
FA507NV Laptop). The panic message is always the same. "Attempted to kill idle
task!", Kernel versions ranging from 6.10 to 7.0.
Reproduces by just booting any distro and waiting for a bit. Expected result is
obviosly an absence of a kernel panic.

Call trace is almost always like this:

Acpi_idle_bm_check+0x99/0x100
Acpi_idle_enter_bm+0x1b/0x100
Cpuidle_enter_state+0x83/0x220
Cpuidle_enter+0x2c/0x40
Cpu_startup_entry+0x292/0x320
Start_secondary+0x9a/0xa0
Common_startup_64+0x13e/0x140

I already tried following kernel parameters:

processor.max_cstate=1
idle=nomwait
pcie_aspm=off
amd_iommu=force_isolation
iommu=force
cpuidle.off=1
processor.nocst
acpi=off

Last one, acpi=off did help. But the usability of the system without acpi is
questionable.
I did already check the RAM with memtest, i replaced the ssds, boot media
(installation media also crashes the same), removing wifi card, nothing helped.
Crashes are very random, they might happen almost right after bootloader loads
Linux, in a couple of minutes, or even never. Bios update 318 temporarily fixed
the issue. But after around two weeks, it returned. Reflashing the same BIOS
helped, again, temporarily. But following that, next flashes did not help.
Similar issue is exhibited in windows, though there it's only seen during boot,
if the system boots, it works. Also, windows installation media suffers the
same issue as Linux, so does safe boot. And that's speculation from my part but
i guess windows has some built-in mechanism to fix some low level software
error these laptops have. I am not the only one with said issue, multiple
people with FA507 family laptops suffer the same issues, though mostly with
windows, since they don't use linux. Different windows builds behave the same,
they work when booted, but the booting itself is unstable and leads to various
errors (The ones i tried: Win 10 2021 LTSC, Win 11 23h2, Win 11 24h2, Win 11
24h2 LTSC, Win 11 25h2). Windows crash messages are different, the most often
ones are:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Hypervisor Error
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

If a module is shown, it's always ntoskrnl.exe

Sometimes Linux panics so bad that it doesn't even show the error itself, just
blinking caps lock, a couple times not even that, just a freeze. Similar thing
sometimes happen to windows when booting or in installation media. I also
already tried changing up pretty much every BIOS setting i could, including
virtualization, fast boot, asus erp, etc.. Nothing helped. Here are links to
descriptions of likely the same issue:

Even a google search "fa570nv bsod" leads to a bunch of results of a very
similar issue, likely the same one.

This is a link to an issue on unnoficial discord channel for asus laptops,
describing this problem.
