The technical documentation is just that -- technical documentation. The demo site, on the other hand, has an extensive section of how-to's which cover most of the essential techniques you need when building a site. Granted, it isn't step by step, but it is very instructive nonetheless.
I was stopped by the message 'Unable to publish database' and 'Number of licenses exceeded'. I thought one could develop with 4D for a limited time (one hour?) and then have to restart to do more.
If you got "Unable to publish database", you are probably running under OS X and have the web server port set to the default, port 80. If that is the case you either have to launch 4D as root or change the web server port to something higher than 1024 (like 8080) in the database preferences and use that port number in the URL.
