Now I need to be able to add extensive and full-featured bulletin
boards to some of these sites.
I can see a couple of alternatives:
1. I write a huge amount of 4D and Active4D code to build the
bulletin boards myself. Unless there's a template for this that
some kind soul has made public then this will take a lot of time.
Majorly reinventing the wheel...
2. I install a PC server and use the freeware PHPBB, www.phpbb.com.
This has the advantage that it can be up and running quickly, but
the disadvantage that I would need to buy more hardware, and learn
PHP in order to be able to customise it beyond the standard settings.
You can get a cheap server for about US $500 these days that is more
than adequate for running PHPBB. I would use FreeBSD, BTW, it's the
best server software out there.
As for configuring PHPBB, unless you need to do dramatic changes to
the BB I don't see why you need to learn PHP. It is quite
configurable without programming.
