Ajax relies on heavy use of XML
the trend is toward returning JSON-encoded data, which is a much
more compact data representation than XML.
Compact it may be, and very well suited for web-browser
implementation, but I'd have concerns when implementing a formatted
response which is primarily aimed for web browser parsing using the
Javascript engine. While XML can be much heavier, it is more flexible
for output devices and you don't have to worry about having several
different client-dependent response formats. I'd say it depends on
your requirements, application and the anticipated server load.
