More specifically did you ever return JSON objects that would be used to configure ExtJS components?

No, only database data.


If so, did you build those objects with the utilities in your JSON library, or simply by creating a valid JSON string literal. The latter case would of course only work for static pre-defined configurations?

You can build objects with the JSON library easily. The new version on the wiki has a startObject and endObject methods. I'm in the process of putting together Active4D v4.5, that will have full documentation for the json library.
