Norbert, Thanks for the suggestion. I tried creating new virtual host files with Notepad and WordPad (which I've used before), and am still getting unreliable results. I tried a new clean installation to a new folder on the same machine and got the same results.
I can, however, consistently get the one virtualhost I need right now to work repeatedly, so after I get some urgent work done, I'll need to revisit this issue. Aparajita, thanks a million for your ideas and patience. When I get some more time and access to different hardware, I'll start fresh and see what I get. So after "save as" and setting CR for line ending and MacRoman as encoding everything worked again (this was 4D 2004). The problem was some entries worked some not. So I think there was a mismatch with different line endings. So I´m not shure if this helps in this case.
