Michael, I would look into using launchd to run a script to stop and restart 4D server at 4am.
I've done something similar to make sure that the 4D Remote that runs our "web client" will restart if 4D crashes. In our case this only happens every month or so. Actually since I've had very limited luck trying to Quit 4D via an external script, I would suggest that you put code in your structure that will gracefully shutdown the server at 4am, and let launchd run a script that will restart server if not running. There is a front-end to launchd called Lingon. It used to be free, then was no longer supported, but now I see that the author is selling it for only 4.99 from the Mac App Store.
