One of my customers runs a very substantial eCommerce system which uses 3-tier
architecture which we've had in place for about 6-7 years now.

Setup is:

Presentation Tier: Apache

Business Logic Tier: 4 x loadbalanced 4D Clients running Active4D (3 or which
are customer facing and one of which is an internal facing admin server)

Database Tier: 4D Server

What makes this work more than anything is Active4D because you can reproduce
your 4D business logic in scripted pages and libraries which are "hot
swappable" if need be. These all "live" on the middle tier which gives the
architecture redundancy, both in a reliability context and a performance one.
