I can't say for sure but I thing you are on the right track. Since the netbios name is usually the leftmost of your DNS name, the process could be hanging on blahblah.com.com.
I would recommend rolling back your one DC so you are back at NT 4.0 and do it over so your NetBIOS name is clean. This is your one chance to call a mulligan and do it right. Once your domain is set, you have it forever (OK a real long time). I've rolled back a couple of times with no problems. Since you are live, take some precautions (backups, etc.) just in case... Here's the deal. Our netbios domain name is blabla.com - note the ".com" - DNS is ok yet dcdiag does report "could not get DNSdomainname" which has me worried that the ".com" is going to hinder this upgrade. ANy thoughts on that? I ran into this problem and the DNS configuration on the box that I was trying to promote was bad. It needs to talk the DNS box the has the SRV records for the current Win2K DC Diane -----Original Message----- From: Lori Demkovich [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 11:32 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED] ' Cc: Jeremy Moskowitz Subject: [ActiveDir] unable to promote to DC Hey all I have a good problem. We recently upgraded our domain from NT 4.0 SP6a to Windows 2000 SP2. The migration of the PDC went well, no event errors, no dns errors, all our trusts are still functioning, users logon, execute their logon script ect... All DNS and AD tests such as nltest, dcdiag, netdiag and all are successful. Problem: when we try to add another domain controller (dcpromo) we get the error: Unable to find domain <domain name> in Active Directory or the domain controller for <domain name> is unavailable. We have isolated the member servers and the domain controller and still no success. Dynamic DNS is WORKING. The members are being register correctly. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks, Lori D.
