Did a little research just b/c, I found this post:

"If your plan A is to use DHCP for your printers, and you are
using HP JetDirect cards, then invoke plan B.
HP JetDirect cards, firmware vA.5.0.5 and later claim to "support" DHCP. I
don't think they quit reading the RFC before they reached sec 4.4.4. The
cards will not renew their leases at T1 or T2 time; i's just not built in.
(This was confirmed w/a call to HP support). Therefore, once the lease and
WINS entry expires, the printer drops from existence; you must to reboot the
printer in order for the printer to register. This is really disappointing
from HP. Static addressing of printers seems to be the way to go."

I would bet money that it is an HP issue if you are having these printers use DHCP.

I got that knowledge from a consultant that was helping me, he said that you
need WINS even though MS says you don't got printing. I haven't seen
documentation on it, even though I looked. He had read it though and said
it is very very hard to find because they don't want you to know it.

Getting ready to deploy active directory and we have HP and Jetdirect cards.
What happens without WINS They don't recognize DNS? Is there soemthing
offical from th HP site?

I have found that if you have HP Printers in your network and HP Jet directs
that you will need to have WINS otherwise you will have a hell of a time
trying to get printing undercontrol.

Agreed, if your clients are running y2k you should not need wins, however in
my experience windows 98 clients love WINS and don't like dns so much. Try
not installing it and install it if you have to.

I would make sure you even need WINS before enabling it on the new 2k PDC.
In my experience, the configuration of DNS on a new win 2000 server seems to
vary in degrees of success, I would attempt to install these on the PDC
first. You mihgt have a better chance of a smooth conversion rather than an
addition. Be sure initially to configure a bogus DHCP range so there are no
overlapping issues.
