I agree with all that you have listed. But why are the DC in the child domain 
reverting to AD integrated after reboot when they have been set to secondary?

I have not tried going from AD Integrated to Primary....but

AD integrated will not replicate to an AD integrated DC in another domain
within the same forest.  This is because the DNS info is stored in the
domain partition in AD.  

So your replication may not work because you are trying to do ADI DNS to two
different domains.

AD integrated does not replicate properly. However after switching to
