If we created an inhouse DL manager, would we be able to keep the DL's in
the root domain and be able to add memebership from other domains as long as
they are Universal groups by making everyone use this custom prog? What if
my child domains are mixed mode and my root domain is native mode? Will
this cause a problem?

AutoDL - on the Exchange 2000 resource kit. An unsupported MS product
that provides a web front end to distribution list management and
extends the supported feature set. Very useful, though a pain in the
rear to setup.
There's a document entitled 'The Ultimate Guide to AutoDL' or something
similar on technet. MS use it internally for their DL management, well
did at some point, I'm sure it's been upgraded since then!

What is AutoDL? Can you send me some info on that

They won't service exchange 2000 because the relevant provider doesn't
run until the GC's are rebooted after they're promoted. Each GC needs to
be rebooted once promoted, presumably after the SYSVOL replication if
it's just been dcpromo'd.

That should be OK, as the ADC checks against a GC in the forest when
it's determining whether to create a new object or match it to an
existing one.

I'm afraid not - the GC that the MAPI clients talk to is only capable of
reading universal group membership (as it's replicated), though it
cannot be modified if it's in a different domain.
We've taken to using AutoDL instead....

In my situation of an empty root domain with production domain (where
the
users and exchange 5.5 are) as a child was to setup the adc connector on
one
of the root DC's after running forestprep in the root and domain prep in
the
root and the child domain.
I then configured the connection agreements between the exchange 5.5
server
to the directory service in the child domain. I did have to do some
extra
steps with the root level adc service account, such as make it a service
account admin in the exchange 5.5 org/site/configuration and a local
admin
of the new 2000 exchange server. Then of course reboot all the domain
controllers in the child domain so the GC's would accept MAPI requests (
a
must for actually migrating the user accounts).

What if I was to setup an ADC for each domain I configure, is that
possible?
I can see where you are coming from when users are created in Exchange
then
sent over to AD. Similar too with DL's and Custom Recipients. I am
going to
have to be careful on how I set that up.

My DL's are universal distribution groups, wouldn't this solve that
issue of
updating membership through a MAPI client?

Justin,

Just trying to get my head around this, you intend to install the ADC,
then setup recipient CA's for your users in 5.5. In your environment
you'd need multiple CA's from the Exchange Site into each domain in
which you have
Primary NT accounts associated with mailboxes in the store.
So, that would replicate the 5.5 organisation information, public folder
hierarchy etc etc into the AD, then the RCA's would equivalent objects
in the AD.
When you create a Windows 2000/Exchange 2000 user, the RUS would stamp
it, then the information would be replicated back to the 5.5 directory
by the ADC.
However, to quote MS "For Exchange Server Custom Recipients,
Distribution Lists, and Mailboxes which do not have a corresponding
Active Directory user object, the ADC creates new objects in one of the
Active Directory domains. You will need to decide in which Active
Directory domain you want the ADC to create new objects."
As far as the ADC goes, just follow the usual MS guidelines about port
clashes with DC's, and I'm sure you'll be fine.
The only problem I could perceive is that of updating distribution lists
from a MAPI client. When we had clients that used a local GC (not in the
same domain as the DL's) then we could not update DL's through MAPI.
Anyone else seen this? Any workarounds?
Well, I'm still not sure I've answered the question, or even know what
the question was apart from 'what about the ADC'.

Darren.

No that is what I wanted to hear, I will only have one Exchange site,
but
multiple domains, so if I do a domain prep in each domain I should be
okay,
but my original question was what about the ADC? Keep in mind I still
use
exchange 5.5.

That You might have to clarify that a little, as:
An Exchange organisation exists in the configuration naming context of
the
forest, and is therefore forest wide (thus only one Exchange org per
forest).
If you wish to locate users/servers in more than one AD domain, you'll
need
to domain prep that domain to setup the relevant objects. The
complication
with usually lies with multiple Exchange sites, not multiple domains.
Perhaps I've missed the point!!
Darren.

How would the ADC work if I have multiple AD domains and only one
Exchange
Org located in the root domain of my domain tree?
