If there are ways that the AD team could publicize our key docs better, please feel free to shoot me suggestions. Where you do go about finding this stuff day-to-day? Moving forward we'll try and make sure that activedir.org knows about any key docs or tools that we post to the web.
Today, we make sure that all of our key docs get posted on http://www.microsoft.com/activedirectory. If I had to pick 5 "must read" docs, I would pick: 1. Best Practice Active Directory Design for Managing Windows Networks 2. Best Practice Active Directory Deployment for Managing Windows Networks 3. Design Considerations for Delegation of Administration in Active Directory 4. Active Directory Operations Guide 5. Active Directory Branch Office Planning Guide Just FYI, we recently launched a Directory Services community page on Microsoft.com at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/centers/directoryservices /default.asp. I hope that activedir.org and that community can be nice compliments to each other. By the way, let me introduce myself. I'm the Group Program Manager of the Active Directory team in the Window Server group at Microsoft. I lead a team of engineers that works with customers to understand product requirements, and do high level design & engineering based on those requirements. You probably saw a message from Levon Esibov about an informal meeting we're having at MEC 2002 next week. Folks from my team will be mingling in that meeting - we're looking forward to meeting you, if you will be there! My apologies for misassigning the credit. Nonetheless, its still a really good doc that isn't publicized enough. If you are interested enough in AD to subscribe to this list, you should read the AD Ops Guide. -gil -----Original Message----- From: Stuart Kwan To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 10/1/02 5:42 PM Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Active Directory Operations Guide Hey Gil, who is Mike Barnard? -----Original Message----- From: Gil Kirkpatrick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 01, 2002 1:11 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Active Directory Operations Guide I thought *everyone* knew about this... yet another case of a MSFT gem not being well promoted, I guess. I was a reviewer on this doc early on, and I have to say its quite good. It follows the structure of the ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library www.itil.co.uk), a UK government-funded project to accumulate IT best practices in a single (huge) document library. MSFT is producing similar docs for other system services and applications, but I don't know where they are on it. Mike Barnard from MSFT did a great job on the AD piece. -gil -----Original Message----- From: Myrick, Todd (NIH/CIT) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, October 01, 2002 12:21 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [ActiveDir] Active Directory Operations Guide http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodt echn ol/ad/windows2000/maintain/opsguide/default.asp I have been searching for a document like this to go along with my Architecture Document, and Implementation Document. Figured I would share my find with you fine folks. It serves as a good framework document.
