Primarily because a ping does not test hardware.  If the NIC was
marginally functional, ICMP may have worked, where other protocols using
IP or directed communication may not have.  Yes, it's typically touted
that if ping works, the network is fine.  This, in fact is true -
machine to machine communication (through routers, switches, etc.) is
fine.

However, this may not discole problems at the hardware level.  Sometimes
it's just necessary to go back to good old hardware trouble shooting
when everything else works.  Try the hardware diags, or - as you did -
replace the suspected component.

Though I'm sure this is a paraphrase, Sherlock Holmes often told Watson:

"When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever
remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

In your case, I think this, too, applies.  Strange thing, these
computers.  ;)
