I'd try :

1) obtain the type and id of the network adapter
2) the bios information code

In windows 2000 it's possible force the network adapter to use the native features indipendently from those garanteed by the driver.
The mechanism is provided by a call to the internal chips of the board.
The board of a laptop has a different signature to identify these features and only a little firms produces this firm (Intel, 3com).
If you have Lan card in PCMCIA in this case you can couple the suggestion of Guido AND the presence in PCMCIA bus of a lan card (that is a very strange situation in desktop configuration)

The second point is that the BIOS producer makes a code very different between Laptop a Desktop Compute.
The BIOS producer are AWARD and AMI (now only a firm) and in their sites web you'll find the mode to identify.
Good Work

Guido,
we have a huge number of desktops with pcmcia card readers
installed, so I think that one is unreliable for my prposes. Thanks for the
suggestion though! -JB

Gil's example is great to show the value of WMI filters for GPOs in Win2k3...

Another GPO independent option is to check the registry for the existance of
the PCMCIA key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pcmcia

you'll likely find this on every laptop, but hardly on any desktops. Not
100% but pretty close.

/Guido

You could also search the local WMI for an object of class "Win32_PortableBattery".

We use machine naming conventions to distingush laptops

[airport code of city][branch location id][computer
role,Workstation,laptop..etc][date built]

Also we've got a database with every piece of hardware so we know..

Existing IP scheme is static, and that's not viable to change at this time.

You can do this with segmentation on a DHCP network.

Perhaps someone here might know:

Is there any machine attribute or registry value that can be queried
to differentiate workstations and laptops on a domain? We have a
circumstance that requires laptops to be addressed differently from
workstations, and we have been unable to find any consistent variable to
poll for this determination. Any suggestions or assistance is most
appreciated.
