:o)

Come on Rick think damn you! I need the laugh!

I have a laugh for you though.

Imagine a product that works in a cross realm (cross domain) manner fine for
say modifying distribution lists via the most common client used for it. Now
say you upgrade that product and now, you can no longer do this DL
management consistently with your common client but instead are told you
need to teach your exec admins who own the lists how to use AD Admin tools
or build a web site to do the management or a special app or hard code the
client to point at specific servers. So then you say, well crap let's build
an app or use the admin tools and then you have to remind your vendor that
due to the way they hide the membership in these DL's the people who own the
list can't see who is on it to effectively manage it unless they are one of
the actual email servers OR have account op rights.... It will take another
custom script/app to get to the point that you can allow this delegated
management instead of the built-in tools having the flexibility to do it.
Again, all for functionality that has existed in the product previously and
was easy to use. Most basically I could write fairly elegant functional
solutions for all of this and post on the joeware site but the question I
have and that I seem to continue to have every week... If this product has
been out 3 years, why aren't these things figured out and fixes released
already? This is a client issue... Oh ok so client 2000 and client xp have
an issue and you fixed it in the just released client 2003 correct? Errr...
no. But the interface is still in client 2003 to make you think you should
do it that way.... Ah yah.

How does this all tie together? Exchange cookbook recipe #1.... Take
Exchange media from media sleeve. Place in pot of boiling water. Let simmer
for 4-6 hours on high rolling boil. Remove from heat. Add a dash of vanilla
to make it smell good. Pour down the sink. :op

The alien creature frowned briefly and consulted what appeared to be some
species of clipboard that it was holding in its thin and spindly alien hand.

"Joe Richards?" it said.

Joe nodded helplessly...

<SNIP>

Ahhh....everyone's seen this one.

If I only could have come up with something original (that was remotely as
funny).

Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Robbie's 'Tuna' book - It's imminently available!

I agree with this except the advanced admins statement. I think this is a
one size fits nearly all. When you need a quick hitter you pull this off the
shelf. If, however, when you say advanced admins you mean admins bright
enough to buy the right books. Yep this will be on the shelves of the
advanced admins.

Congratulations Robbie, you have done, once again, a fantastic job. This
book is going to be a staple for advanced AD administrator's. I have to
agree with Rick, I didn't quite realize the magnitude of what Robbie was
doing until I had the book in my hands (this afternoon!). Go get it.

All -

Most of you have read the threads that have accompanied the journey that
began some months ago when Robbie announced that he was writing a new book -
"The Active Directory Cookbook" (published by O'Reilly) - which covers some
very cool 'how-to' information on Windows 2000 and 2003 Active Directory
(and supporting players).

Some of you may also be aware that Joe Richards, Todd Myrick, Gil
Kirkpatrick, Tony Murray, Kevin Sullivan, and I were invited to assist with
the Technical Review of the book.

I mentioned to some folks that this book is an "Active Directory FAQ on
steroids". I truly didn't realize the gravity of this statement until I had
the book in my hands. Yes, O'Reilly kindly sent me (as well, I'm sure, the
rest of the reviewers) a copy of the book. And, it now is happily bookended
with the 'Cat' book - Robbie and Alistair Lowe-Norris' brilliant "Active
Directory 2/e" and Robbie and Richard Puckett's "Managing Enterprise Active
Directory Services". Add to this a couple more books, and you will have a
full, definitive reference on the totality of understanding, managing,
designing, scripting, and generally surviving Active Directory -
successfully.

I admit it - I'm probably biased. But, I think that the Tuna book is due to
become a classic reference for Active Directory. It has a unique and fresh
approach to doing things that you're not going to find documented in one
place.

So, if you don't have a copy of the 'Tuna' reserved yet, Amazon is taking
reservations - as well as you're local Borders or Barnes and Noble.
What
ARE you waiting for? ;-)
