I also have received my book as well, personally I feel quite honored to be mentioned in the book.
The contribution Robbie has made is that he has set the standard for how AD Operational information should be presented. The book is a remarkable synthesis of relevant AD information. I encourage us to keep the sprit of the book alive as a standard for proposing AD operation standards to this group. The format of Problem/Solution/Discussion and the division of the books section are very logical for someone who structures how they think about things. This along with the AD Operations Guides 1 & 2, RK 2003 AD section, and AD Second Edition Book and Chris Wolf's troubleshooting series are just the beginning. I hope more of these types of books come out in the future, especially for Exchange 200x, ISA, SQL 200x, IIS. What is interesting is that my Architecture Documents I constructed here follow the same format as Robbie's book. I also encourage 3rd Party vendors to start making their product documentation, and products around this some framework. I enjoyed Gil's introduction and I have only one comment. The year of the directory will arrive when we all create it. The technology AD is currently based on requires experts to design, maintain, and operate it. When the AD starts using SQL, XML, SOAP, and other more advanced technology. TYOTD will happen when all the technology that is coming out reaches a dominate design. I hope that by Blackcomb, we see the emergence of network devices that are optimized for network services like AD/DDNS/DHCP/CA/UDDI/Wireless Access Provisioning. That these devices have workflow for identity access management, syncing to other directories, SSO for web-enabled apps, self healing, and the cost is about $2000.00 or less per device. Once you have a product of value that is fast to deploy and maintain, scalable, fault-tolerant, and turn-key. That is when you reach critical mass. Much like what Banyan Vines was several years ago; You also should be able to plug your MP3 player into the stereo as well. The question is, Is it possible? What will it look like. How will it be made possible? I think in order to have TYOTD you need to pre-visualize it, produce it, then post-visualize it. Robbie's book is a key element to the pre-visualization, more work needs to be done. All - Most of you have read the threads that have accompanied the journey that began some months ago when Robbie announced that he was writing a new book - "The Active Directory Cookbook" (published by O'Reilly) - which covers some very cool 'how-to' information on Windows 2000 and 2003 Active Directory (and supporting players). Some of you may also be aware that Joe Richards, Todd Myrick, Gil Kirkpatrick, Tony Murray, Kevin Sullivan, and I were invited to assist with the Technical Review of the book. I mentioned to some folks that this book is an "Active Directory FAQ on steroids". I truly didn't realize the gravity of this statement until I had the book in my hands. Yes, O'Reilly kindly sent me (as well, I'm sure, the rest of the reviewers) a copy of the book. And, it now is happily bookended with the 'Cat' book - Robbie and Alistair Lowe-Norris' brilliant "Active Directory 2/e" and Robbie and Richard Puckett's "Managing Enterprise Active Directory Services". Add to this a couple more books, and you will have a full, definitive reference on the totality of understanding, managing, designing, scripting, and generally surviving Active Directory - successfully. I admit it - I'm probably biased. But, I think that the Tuna book is due to become a classic reference for Active Directory. It has a unique and fresh approach to doing things that you're not going to find documented in one place. So, if you don't have a copy of the 'Tuna' reserved yet, Amazon is taking reservations - as well as you're local Borders or Barnes and Noble. What ARE you waiting for? ;-) Rick Kingslan MCSE, MCSA, MCT Microsoft MVP - Active Directory Associate Expert Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone List info : http://www.activedir.org/mail_list.htm List FAQ : http://www.activedir.org/list_faq.htm List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/ List info : http://www.activedir.org/mail_list.htm List FAQ : http://www.activedir.org/list_faq.htm List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/
