Jerry,

here's what I'd suggest - I've never done it.....so it's a fairly simplistic overview -  but it's based on everything I've read here and in other lists..... (oh - don't forget to test it first!!)

Setup DNS on Win2K3 server and ensure that information is replicating / zones transfers etc are OK and all information is correct
Change your DHCP scope to point to the new Win2K3 server for primary DNS
ensure that all clients have renewed their lease / picked up the revised information (don't forget to amend settings on any static IP'ed machines)
stop DNS on old server - wait a few days for "problem" clients to come out of woodwork - fix as required
Transfer FSMO roles to Win2K3 server and ensure that all is OK
Remove DNS entries for old server and shut down completely
Rebuild server as Win2K3, install DNS and share out FSMO roles for redundancy
repeat for third server.....

Hopefully some of the lists _real_ experts will wake up soon and then pick holes in my plan :->

Hi Folks,

I have 2 w2k servers in my network that are responsible for all the FSMO roles,DNS,DHCP,etc. Have just promoted a server3k member server to DC status and would

Like to temporarily give the 3k server all of the above responsibility while I decommission the 2k servers one at a time and rebuild them as 3k servers.

The problem is that all 2k and xp clients point to the 2k servers for DNS, which leads to my question. Can I change the IP address of the 3k server to that of one of the 2k servers once it is out of the loop and not experience any problems?  I read an article about how to do it but would like to know if anyone has done this and if so what should I look out for as far as gotchas, etc.

Thank you in advance

Jerry
