You must have all main peripherals and a different mainboard;
If you change disk architeture (from scsi to ide, eide, sata etc.) you can do some before to speed tre process.
In Tehnet there are the detailed explanation.
I tried it with success with three different DC.

Yep, I understand.
I still didn't think you could do that if Exchange was installed on that server. I stand corrected.

that's for a DOMAIN rename - but this is just a DC rename... (which is not the same - even in a single-DC domain environment)

I didn't think that worked if Exchange was in the mix...

and with 2003 you can change the name of the DC afterwards to match the retired DC's name...

Recovering to dissimilar hw can be a real pain. The less risky option would be to bring up the new DC as a second DC, set it to be a GC, transfer all the FSMOs, configure DNS, WINS, DHCP, and whatever else and then retire the original DC.
It's likely to be a lot of work given that you also have Exchange, file and print, etc., but you can stage the work and it might save you heartache in the long run.

Hi all,
I would like to know if anyone has any pointers or guides that can help me through replacing the hardware of a DC. This is because I want to replace the server with a new faster and better machine. I'm not fussed about downtime as its only a small shop. The server is also running Exchange 2000. I'm using
Veritas and the agent for Exchange, though I'm not too worried about this part.
Its the only server in the domain and there are no other domains. I want to
keep the same server name as its a file and print server too. The old machine will be recycled in to the user pool.
I have been reading the following guide but the section on the HAL worries me slightly. Obviously, I want to retain the GUID, the user and computer accounts and such like.
