Because it needs config files. Try installing Office using the Custom
option and selecting "Run all from my computer", then remove the
components you don't want (ie: Office Assistant). I've been doing it
that way for 4 years.

Also you might want to create a dir on the root of C:\ to copy the
PRO.msi cab. I always use C:\Admin Files. You can also go into the
registry and change the Office install path to this dir or a location on
a server.

If you are using active directory, why don't you just install Office
through group Policy.  That way if there are files that are needed, the
computer can get them right away.

I install MS Office 2000 on my master clone machine then ghost the
images on
to those lab machines.  Once I join the computer to the domain and a
user
tries to use office it ask for the installation cds, why is this?  It
happens will all users unless they are a local administrator.
