So if you have a win2k3 domain, then you've already run forest and domain
prep, or just dcpromo'd it straight up, right? I'll assume so.

If you dcpromo the win2k box as a new domain in the win2k3 domain's
forest, you will later need to run domain prep on the new win2k domain.

If you dcpromo the win2k box as a new replica of the win2k3 domain, you
will not.

Note: You're playing it fast and lose with the word join. Joining a
domain does not involve dcpromo necessarily. Any member server or
workstation can do what's known as join a domain. I myself pevert the
term dcpromo to indicate the action of bringing up a DC. Such as "I
dcpromo'd a replica DC", or "I'm dcpromoing a new domain DC.". You don't
need to run adprep on a regular computer that just joins a domain (w/o
becoming a DC).
