I am confused by what you are looking to do in this post... You could be saying you want to join a 2K machine as a member of a K3 Domain or you could be saying you want to promote a 2K DC into a K3 Domain. I only say the latter because of your mention of ADPREP. ADPREP is something you do with domain controllers.
If the 2K machine is going to be a Domain Controller of or a member of a K3 Domain, it will not need ADPREP run on it. If it is DCPROMOed into being a Domain Controller of a new domain in a forest you will eventually have to ADPREP /domainprep it once you want to add K3 DCs to that domain.
