So long as you're including DNS etc I would only change the last part : power off the 2000 server, WAIT 1 WEEK, if no issues format.

Be careful if they have other apps as those might rely on name resolution which may be tied to the server.  They may also have other processes that rely on the IP address, such as firewall rules, printers, SMTP, etc.

Subject: [ActiveDir] small domain upgrade strategy

I have a small non-profit I help out, and they have about 10 users and a single Win2K domain controller. They have purchased a new server, which comes with 2003. They want to get rid of the old server, so I intend to migrate as follows, and just want to make sure this is correct:

1.      On the Win2K server, run adprep /forestprep
2.      Same server, run adprep /domainprep
3.      Install the Win2003 server, make it a second DC in the domain
4.      Migrate the users' data directories, etc. to the Win2003 server
5.      Transfer AD roles to the 2003 server
6.      Power off the 2000 server and format

Is this a valid plan?

Thanks!

Mark
