I really appreciate all the answers and help.. I just was trying to
think ahead of the issues.. With this environment I need to automate as
much as possible and be preemptive. Thanks again. I will test this
stuff and if I get something working I will share with all

Thanks

See Q243267 for automating NTDSUTIL. As for rebooting into restore mode
see Q239780. Using the information in both of these articles you should
be able to do the following:

1. Create a batch command that
        a. Modifies boot.ini appropriately
        b. Places a second batch (see below) command into the Run/Run
Once/Start Up (or whatever you need to get something kicked
of in
           restore mode)
        c. Reboots the system
2. Use the AT command or other scheduling service to schedule the batch
3. Create a second batch that
        a. Initiates an automated NTDSUTIL run to defrag the DIT
        b. Modifies the boot.ini file.
        c. Reboots the system

So in fairness, let's answer the question. I don't know of any way to
automate this since it uses directory services restore (I've heard
there's a way to boot to recovery mode, but never had occasion to do so
automatically)
and ntdsutil, I can think of no way to do this in a scripted or
otherwise automated way with Windows 2000.

You'll likely want to do these one at a time and make sure they come
back on time anyway, so a manual effort this time to see if it clears
your error may not be a bad idea.

I don't want to interfere with the support case, but I would think if
you're trying to solve an issue you would want to approach this
scientifically and only defrag a test case to find out the results
before spending the time, effort and risk to go the rest of the way.
What would be the point if it doesn't solve the issue?

One other thing: since Microsoft is recommending this, if you haven't
checked already, it might be a good idea to check with your support rep
to see if there is a way to automate if that's the recommended way to
fix your environment. With 100 servers, you're not likely to be able to
do this
manually very often.

Only the 6 dc's in the same "site". We have 100+ dc's over all

Just curious...

How many other DC's do you have?
Are you saying the other DC's aren't having the same issue?

Just curious why MS would recommend you defrag the AD.

We are troubleshoot an issue with MS and they suggested we do this.
It appears that at a certain time during the day (give or take 30 min.)
our core DC's (4 servers) go nuts. These servers are not the core
bridgeheads.
LSASS uses every piece of memory it can get for about 2 hrs. The dc
runs out of memory and LSASS starts paging memory. Then it goes away.

I'd be interested to know why you might want to do this. I would expect
an offline defrag to be required only in exceptional circumstances, e.g.
to reclaim space following a demerger in which many objects have . It's
not something you need to perform regularly as the NTDS.DIT is
maintained automatically using built-in utilities anyway.

Is there a way to automate offline defrag on the AD. It is a real pain
to do the MS article way of defragging the NTDS.DIT. Does anybody know
of a batch, vbs or utility that does offline defrag of the AD ?????
