Well, in fairness (having worked on BE a few years ago) they aren't really proprietary methods. They use MAPI calls.
Which explains why it's so slow - you open every mailbox to be backed up, and you open every message in that mailbox, and you copy it. That's pretty much the top secret proprietary method ;) Remember when Antivirus for Exchange all used MAPI and it *bogged* the server down so badly? Same thing here.
