... and I'm confused, if you knew the answer already why didn't you simply provide it?

In reference to your questions; have you researched this yourself?  This information is readily available.  In the time it would take me to cover each topic in sufficient detail, google (or msnsearch) will likely reveal similar (if not more detailed) results.  Should you have any questions regarding the information derived from the web, (time permitting ... which is rare these days) I'd be more than willing to answer.

Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Display in ADUC

 I know that.
Thanks Dean

Just wondering what affects what.

Does changing that affect the creation of the name displayed(not to be confused with displayName) in ADUC ?
Or just the GAL?
How 'bout the CN?

The CN is created from given name and surname so i assume it is affected by changing the DisplaySpecifiers node which in turn should affect the name displayed in ADUC as well as the GAL....

And the CN is pretty much the same as the RDN and the CN is NOT the same as the Cannoical Name which is just a backwards DN?

am i right on anything?

Also while i'm on the topic, what is it with MS and names?

The name displayed in the admin utils is NOT the same as the displayName.
A domain is a managment boundary as well as a way to segment the namespace in dns as well as a NC.
Why can't MS retire "domain" and use Realm for the management part and something like "local paratition" for the NC part and just leave domain for dns?

Also, controlAccessRight vs controlAccessRights??

A rose is a rose...

thanks again.

1. Run ADSIEDIT.MSC (or equiv.) from the Support Tools (located on the Windows CD)
2. Expand the Configuration container
3. Expand cn=DisplaySpecifiers then cn=409 (assuming this is for US English ... whatever that is ;o)
4. Locate cn=user-Display and bring up its properties.
5. Locate and edit the createDialog property
6. Set the value to the following literal (or experiment and locate the properties of your choosing) -

 %<sn>, %<givenName>

7. Ensure the change above has replicated to or was originated against the DC(s) in focus before re-running Active
Directory Users and Computers

Subject: [ActiveDir] Display in ADUC

We have 2003 AD. I changed the display name of a user in their property sheet  but it still shows the old display name when you look at it in Active Directory Users and Computers. You can look at the properties and it shows the new display name.. What else do I need to do?
