I think you misunderstand me. i know the diff between the lDAPDisplayName and the display name that you see in the gui and that ldap, adsi, and all apps use the former. i was just wondering what the relationship is between how the display name gets built, its relationship to the name displayed in the GAL(same thing?) and chaning the format in the Display Specifiers node of the config NC. does changing the Display Specifiers change all future user object(if you change the User-Display prop) syntax in the ADUC gui (and other mmc's)AND the GAL or just the GAL. Also, it was news to me that the name displayed when you view an object in ADUC is NOT the display name but the CN which made me think about the relationship between the CN and display name and how they are constructed as well as the origin of other names like DN and cannoical name which further made me thing of how MS uses/misuses names like domain(or boot partition) , confusing an already potentially confusing topic and confused admin. Thats all. thanks

Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] Display in ADUC
whenever I want to map the GUI of ADUC with actual attribute on user,
I just create a test user, and set the specific property on user to
something like XXXXX
and open the adsiedit.msc for that user and check the attribute list
with value XXXXX
voila.. you got the mapping.
you can do reverse also, set value in adsiedit.msc and come back to
ADUC and see which property got populated.
e.g. if you go to user properties and set the value of City = XXXXX
you will find that it corresponds to attribute L in user properties.
Other application don't go by the GUI name of property in ADUC, they go
by the actual attribute name.
so if you know, the attribute name, which is used by any application,
above process will give you
way to map GUI of ADUC with what application uses.
I hope this helps.

ok, so the Common Name is created from the First and Last name
and in ADUC, the name displayed is NOT the displayName but the CN yet in the
GAL it is the displayNmae that you see?
And how is the CN affected by the DisplaySpecifiers node in the
config NC?
And in ADUC?
And the GAL?
and changing this will only affect new users so you have to
edit the displayName attrib of your existing users to get it uniform?
And how does AD create a cannonical name? Is it just a DN
reversed?
And whats in a name anyway?
Thanks

F2 the users name and change it, OK it, you then get a
different properties box, this should help to clarify the parameters.

Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] Display in ADUC
The Display Name is not what is showing in ADUC. ADUC
in the Name column is showing the CN. The CN *must* be unique for an user in a
specific OU, and therefore is the field that can be used to select and open the
properties of a user object.
Right-click and RENAME the user.
TIPS
You will also want to think about adding more useful
columns to your ADUC view: View Add/Remove Columns. (Helps you sort by last
name) for example.
One tip about that: when you add a column in a normal
AD UC node (e.g. add last name to a user OU) that column will appear in
*every* node (even in a computers OU) which is stupid and youll hate it. Saved
Queries allow you to have unique columns visible per query, so you could create
a query that shows *anything* (even a show all users in this OU query) and that
will let you add the last name column to just that query.

Subject: [ActiveDir] Display in ADUC
We have 2003 AD. I changed the display name of a user
in their property sheet but it still shows the old display name when you look
at it in Active Directory Users and Computers. You can look at the properties
and it shows the new display name.. What else do I need to do?
