Try this:

REBUILDING COUNTERS

Note:  Perform these steps only if you open perfmon and do not see any counters in the list to choose from.

Note:  For more information please read KB300956.

Note:  Expand files Perfc009.da_ and Perfh009.da_ to Perfc009.dat and Perfh009.dat respectively from the appropriate Windows cab files to the SystemRoot\System32 folder of the machine in question.

  1. Start the Registry Editor.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib
  3. Backup this key.
  4. Change the LastCounter value to 1846 (decimal), and change the LastHelp value to 1847 (decimal).
  5. From the command prompt drill down to C:\WINNT\System32 and run the following command:
    • findstr drivername *.ini

Sample output

  1. From the command prompt drill down to C:\WINNT\System32 and run the following command:
    • lodctr %filename%.ini

Ex: lodctr esentprf.ini

  1. Repeat this command for every entry that you get in the output from the command you ran in step 1.
  2. Check perfmon to see if the counters have returned.
  3. If this is an Exchange server, perform the above steps from the C:\%exchangefolder%\bin folder as well (ex: C:\exchsrvr\bin).

I think we went through this earlier.

exctrlist doesn't show any info for the counters i need to enable-

mem,processor,processes,etc.

If only it were that easy.....

EXCTRLST.EXE - 2k3 res kit utility.

I've run into this too many times… Select the counter you wish to enable and check it.

There is an occasion where W2k needs a hotfix first. (kb828603)

From a search in support.microsoft.com , i found this KB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q156494   "Restoring Lost Performance Counters for Exchange".
I think u can reproduce the same resolution for lost  windows counters.

Follow the "Manually Adding Counters" section. Identify what objects and counters are missing by comparing such counters with an other box. Then follow the rest of the procedure.

Tell us if that works.

sorry. I should've mentioned that I tried that.

The mem, processor, etc counters don't show up in exctrlst.exe either

thanks

Hello,,

Did you try to use "exctrlst.exe" that is available in the win2k rkit ?
Here a lin for download
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/exct
rlst-o.asp

This will list for u all perfmon counters availables in you box, and
sometimes counters are just present but hidden or not available.
exctrlst.exe will help u unhide the counters u need.

I have a couple of servers that have lost some key perfmon counters like
memory,processor,process,etc.

How can I get these back?

I don't think just running lodctr /R seems to do anything.

I read on some newsgroup about copying the perfc009.dat and perfh009.dat
from the win2k cd back to system32 but there is little elaboration so
i'm afraid to try this.

Does anyone have any insight on how to restore these?
Thank you
