I did find another way to do it in the DNS that works fine for now. I just created another forward lookup zone and started populating that. I'd still like some portability, since I'd have to update both my laptop's hosts file and the DNS server. There are a couple of us that perform the same maintenance and need the same hosts tables. But in the long run, just maintaining file and DNS isn't that big a deal.
Here's my scenario though, JIC: We are contracted to maintain a number of offices that are independent of each other. They are self contained and are no way interconnected. Each site has its own AD structure with its own DC and connect to the internet via their own ISP. We perform our maintenance via terminal services or VNC, etc. I keep the site names and WAN IP addresses in my hosts file on my laptop. I want to know if I can move that hosts file to our local DNS server and have it resolve for us. We keep adding sites, and I'd have to have to copy the hosts file to every workstation in our office. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Danny Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 4:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ActiveDir] hosts file on AD DNS server On 3/22/06, Arnold Arce <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Quick question: > > Will a W2K3 DNS server use the local hosts file to resolve names? If you elaborate on the specific need, you might encounter a DNS-based solution - provided by our fellow list members - that is far superior to playing with the hosts file. ...D -- CPDE - Certified Petroleum Distribution Engineer CCBC - Certified Canadian Beer Consumer List info : http://www.activedir.org/List.aspx List FAQ : http://www.activedir.org/ListFAQ.aspx List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/ List info : http://www.activedir.org/List.aspx List FAQ : http://www.activedir.org/ListFAQ.aspx List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/
