Sort of an Enterprise Nanny tool. Great for HR.not great for those who think no one's watching.
Provides extensive reporting to management via email. This can be automated and sent via email in several formats. Can hook into AD by providing a DC agent which is installed on a Windows box to query AD for user names. Policy based filtering which can be applied to Active Directory users and/or groups. In a firewall configuration (in our case, Cisco Pix) Websense sends a reset packet to the firewall which in turn blocks your connection to the site. Very fast indeed. Informs the user via the browser that the connection to the site was unsuccessful due to a Websense policy etc.typical stuff. Excellent product but I do have two complaints about Websense: Its licensing model and steep cost. Say you have 50 users/20 computers within a site. Now say you purchased 20 licenses (makes sense right? Theoretically, you'll have a maximum of 20 users at any one time that can be simultaneously connected to the internet) ah.but this is where they get you.they license by connections within a 24 hour period. So.in a 24 hour period 50 users connect. Well, now you have to license for 50 users because in a 24 hour period you had 50 connections. Ugh. You then have to configure Websense so that when you've breached your max connections within a 24 hour period to allow any subsequent connections full access to the internet. You can also go the other way and configure it to disallow any subsequent connections. .my 2cents. -vC _____ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 08, 2006 12:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [ActiveDir] What is Websence (OT) Its a software package that runs on, generally, its own server and connects to a firewall to block access to sites considered nonbusiness critical as in porn, phishing, hate, et. al. Administratively you could block access to anything you wanted but generally to sites that either pose some risk via spyware/malware or information deemed "unnecessary" by management.
