IANAWG, (I am not a windows guru) but I do know alarm is a very Unix-specific function, the operation of which relies on "signals" which is not a facility supported by Microsoft's operating systems. There are other ways of handling asynchronous events under Windows, but I'll let someone more knowledgeable than I comment further. /rr
