Well to be honest I see perl A LOT. I don't know if more or less in and application area I'm talking about. But I do for sure see a lot of perl. I see a lot of scripts in POSIX compatible operating systems using perl. I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but a lot of the time I very frequently see scripts done for things on *nix. Besides what else would you consider parsing syslog logs with? Its system administration abililties are _good_. I also see lots of CGI using perl. I mean php has a good standing, but what they need to do with future releases of perl is make it more easy!!! The number one reason I hear about people picking php over perl is simplicity! They say "Oh that perl regex is so nasty and big!", and other nasty mean things about our perl. Perl also has a future on windows computers, infact microsoft and activestate have a history of money relations. I know this. I got in a huge fight before about a mailing list admin about it to. But I think !
perl has
a lot more to offer then anything microsoft does for its own operating system. You can find perl on nearly every platform there is... I think java may be that way but I don't know about others. Perl for sure has its very good abilities. I'm not able to contain myself about perl6. I'm so excited. I also think its very dangerous and you should tred lightly when critizising perl on this mailing list. I myself have 3 years of loyal perl usage, on both unix, linux, and windows. I'm very loyal to the perl. It is the only scripting language I could ever see me being a hobbyist could use or NEED!

But it seems to me from what I can see all you can do with it is CGI. Perl also taught me how to program. I was so lost with C when I hit dynamic data stuctures. But perl is so silly it allows you to forget about memory allocation, pointers, and all this complicated stuff for novices, and lets you just "play". It was very useful to use for developing my analytical mind. I still even tinker with anglo's in it. I made a hash system that uses arrays, basically the same type of hash that perl has. Its only 1d right now, but still, I was able to use perl to very easily check the formulas I developed. I also think parot looks promising. So I would stay tuned, perl for sure! ! has a very bright future.

come to think of it, it's the last GOOD language ever to come out of
