You can use the '=' and '=cut' in the 1st column.  Its part of POD'ing.

I do this quite often:
=comment
        blah,blahblah
=cut

"=comment" is just a word i made up. Perl ignores code from the starting
"=" up to the "=cut"

I also have my editor set up to detect "=comment" and "=cut" as
begin/end comment, much like
the "C" style /* */
