Bill is tough, but in a good way. He reminds me of my fourth grade teacher. She enforced the classroom standards equally. Everyone toed the line. She grabbed you by the short hairs and yanked until you did. She never let me slide on anything, but I tried, oh yes, I tried. Grin. I give her tons of credit for helping to whip me into shape. At the time I hated her guts, but with adult perspective, I admire her now.

My father was my 3rd and 4th grade teacher. He used to yank the hairs
right behind your ear when you were screwing up in class. My 5th/6th
grade teacher liked to snap a pencil on your ear when you were screwing
around or bop you on the top of the head with it. My 7th/8th grade teacher
actually took a map pointer and whipped the crap out of a kid with it and
that same kid sings his praises to this day (saw him at my last HS reunion).
Our school was his last chance after being kicked out of two public schools.

My hat's off to your dad, metaphorically speaking. Teachers really do touch the future. None of that is allowed now. Pity. We as a society are the poorer for it.
