have you looked in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer?
There might be some information hanging around in here! Though maybe you have it
cleared out already.

When I realised what had happened I went through every Python reference in
the registry that I could identify, deleted it, and then rebooted the
system. Still not managed to hide the old version :-(
I suppose there is something hidden somewhere.

Try going through your registry and deleting the python references.
