Thanks for your reply Kenny. I think we have the problem fixed, and I think it was indeed dumping errors to the log.
By "failing silently", I meant that there was no error visible in the browser window to alert a newbie to check the logs for details. Thanks for letting me know that there is no way to configure it to dump errors to the browser. So I was asking more about tools/processes rather than this specific error.
