When I said Portal, I meant something more along the lines of
this...OpenSource fully DB driven site

are there others?

Ive been looking around a bit and it seems they both seem pretty much on par
really. Both have there pro's and con's.

I think I will port my CMS system over to .NET when our new Win 2k servers
arrive and learn J2EE in the background as well!

if you go to http://java.sun.com and search on the petshop comparison there
are several articles blasting the validity of that comparison. I can care
less I think both technologies rock and have their uses. I didn't want you
to take the gotdotnet site as "truth" it is all skewed to the opinion of the
writer and the technology that writer likes.

Looks good there for .NET. Any other independent links anyone knows of with
.NET vs J2EE comparisons?

My main problem is that J2EE seems to be more in demand, career wise at the
moment!

IMHO: You really cant compare ASP vs .NET OR J2ee

ASP is comparable to other lower-end (crap) scripting technologies like
PHP

Although, .NET and J2EE make a very good comparison.

Take a look at the Pet Shop

I implemented a 30,000 person portal, but we are a java shop. BEA is
the best, we use iplanet... no coment ;-( Plum tree is an asp based one
and it looked really good on the surface.

I'm just curious as to whether anyone has used any interesting ASP
portals....ie.. All-in-one web pages......calendars, polls, news, etc...
