Hi Lynda,

Greetings to you and all ACUPA members from hot and sunny (for today at
least) Melbourne, Australia.

At Monash University, we have found that great care has had to be taken
with how a student is defined, due to questions of legality especially in
relation to the point at which new, continuing or completing students are
not yet or are no longer students, for purposes of fee payments,
scholarships, government reporting, insurance, work placements, non-award
study, re-enrolment deadlines, access to university services and systems,
etc.

At the level of (legally-binding) statute, our pre-eminent definition
(there are others!) is as follows:

*Student* means a person who is enrolled at the University as a candidate
of course or unit of study but does not include a person who -
(a) has qualified for an award or completed the unit, as the case may be;
(b) has been excluded from the University pursuant to the statutes or
regulations;
(c) has had his or her candidature terminated pursuant to the statutes or
regulations;
(d) has not for any academic year or other period of study re-enrolled by
the date for re-enrolment specified by the University; or
(e) has given to the University a signed written notice of discontinuance;
(f) is a student of another institution and is pursuing a unit by
arrangement between the University and the other institution.

Admittedly not quite as succinct as some, and defined more in terms of what
it is not than what it is, but there you are . . .

Regards,
Mark
