Good morning, ACUPA, We at Iowa State U. have been working on a policy governing the use of video surveillance on campus. The subject of Google Glass or other such devices has come up on NACUANET (attorneys' listserv) and I would like to pass along this question to ACUPA, as well:
"We are examining issues related to the use of video recording (without audio) on campus for research purposes using Google Glass. Have any institutions set policies or parameters on the use of video recording on campus using Google Glass (or other devices) for research or other purposes? For example, have institutions prohibited video recording in certain locations such as classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, offices, locker rooms, bathrooms, etc.? Would there be any FERPA or other privacy concerns if class sessions were video recorded using Google Glass, without the consent of the individuals in the class? While video recording on campus is not a new issue, we are concerned that Google Glass enables widespread constant video recording in a manner such that people are not aware they are being recorded." Thanks for any insights you can provide!
