Hi David,

So far at Iowa State University we just have “requirements” for the use of
Unmanned/Uninhabited Aerial Systems for
Research<http://www.vpresearch.iastate.edu/en/policies/unmanneduninhabited_aerial_systems_for_research/>
because we really don’t want to have a policy until we know where the FAA will
“land” on the issue.

We plan to add a section to our facilities use policy that prohibits/limits the
flying of “unmanned powered aircraft” over campus. Here is our proposed wording:

For reasons of privacy and safety, unmanned powered aircraft, otherwise known
as drones, may not be operated over or within ISU property without prior
written approval from the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance.
Permission to use drones over research and demonstration farms may be obtained
by the coordinator of research and demonstration farms. All commercial users
of unmanned powered aircraft shall comply with Federal Aviation Administration
regulations.
       a) This restriction applies to individuals, groups, student
and other organizations, and vendors.
       b) This restriction includes unmanned aircraft, such as model
airplanes, that may be operated by hobbyists.
       c) This restriction does not apply to unmanned aerial systems
(UAS) that have been approved for research, academic or extension purposes by
the Senior Vice President and Provost, or the Vice President for Research in
conformity of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
Good luck!

Subject: [acupa-l] Drone / UAV / Model Aircraft Policies

I see that Indiana University has a policy for the operations of “drones” and
model aircraft.

http://policies.iu.edu/policies/categories/administration-operations/public-safety-institutional-assurance/PS-05.shtml

Any other institutions have one (yet)?

I’ve tried searching for “drone policy” and similar terms. The number of false
positives swamps the real hits.

Thanks very much!
