Sylvia, I'm not at a high enough level to ever be asked to weigh in on such a search-congratulations! We have 15 attorney in our counsel's office, and I work primarily with the senior associate counsel. It's a fascinating question, because the policy function relationship to general counsel is so different at so many institutions. Some of us (Cornell's in this category) consider GC to be our biggest ally, and GC is very proud of and active in our process. At other institutions that we sometimes hear about, GC is a big obstacle and once a policy goes into GC's office for review it may never be seen again.
>From my vantage point, I guess I would want an individual who is thoughtful >about policy, so I would want to know, quite simply, what the candidate thinks >about institutional policy, whether she had any relevant experience with >centralized policy where she comes from, what she would consider the most >important elements of successful policy management-things like that. I would >ask questions that would challenge the candidate to be concise and decisive; >there's nothing worse than an attorney who never takes a stand, even if she's >the best at citing case law and weighing all of the pros and cons of an issue. >I would want a candidate who exhibits a strong sense of leadership and >understands the priorities and mission of your institution. I don't know if this will help, but good luck with your search!
