Hi Sunny, The University of Washington handles policies that affect a college, school, or department in a similar fashion to Cornell; my office only handles the institution-wide UW rules and policies (which includes multiple campuses). I think it’s really a matter of scope for the policy office and its staffing.
However, there is an office that attempts to record and mediate between differing policies within the UW’s colleges or schools as part of the UW’s Faculty Senate. This effort and its success has varied greatly over time. With only one FTE, that wold be impossible for us (not enough effort, and certainly not enough authority). We leave non-university-wide policies entirely up to the dean, VP, or unit head. Specifically, our graduate college is creating some new policies. They have asked who approves them and how they make sure they are in line with university policy. I don't want to become the gatekeeper for all lower level policies at the university, but wonder how this works for you? Thanks for your comments.
