Hi Rachel,

The University of Washington's student conduct code does not prohibit student
speech per se. We do, however, prohibit "disruption or obstruction," including
within the classroom as well as outside the classroom - see WAC
478-120-024<http://www.washington.edu/admin/rules/policies/WAC/478-120-024.html>(10)
 - and we prohibit the "use of university computing facilities or resources to
send intimidating, harassing, or threatening messages" - see WAC
478-120-024<http://www.washington.edu/admin/rules/policies/WAC/478-120-024.html>
 (7)(d).

Hope this helps,

Rebecca

Subject: [acupa-l] Freedom of Speech for Online Class Forums

Good Afternoon Colleagues,
I am looking for examples of your policies that pertain to your freedom of
speech as it relates to what students can and can not say in a discussion forum
for an online class - not freedom of speech in general. Do you have separate
policies for your students for freedom of speech that separate them out in an
educational setting (like a class discussion forum versus a student talking in
the hallway)?

For example in our Student Code, it says under Prohibited Conduct "The use of
profane, lewd, or obscene speech or like expressive behavior (including the
wearing of clothing displaying such language, pictures, or symbols); the use of
defamatory or racist speech or like expressive behavior; or the use of any
speech or behavior implying a physical threat or likely to provoke violence or
retaliation in person or via electronic means, including but not limited to
blogs, texting, email, and social networking sites.

So ours does not separate the speech in whether it is in an educational setting
or not?

Thanks in advance,
Rachel
